Description
Beautiful Mexico | Son Jarocho, Tradition and Modernity
From February 13 to June 12, 2025
In this new edition of the Beautiful Mexico series at the Fundación Casa de México in Spain, we focus on son jarocho, a traditional musical genre from the Sotavento region of the state of Veracruz. A combination of indigenous, African, and Spanish roots intertwined in a rich cultural tradition dating back to the 17th century, its name comes from the word "jarocho," a popular term referring to the inhabitants of Veracruz.
Son jarocho is not just music, but also an integral cultural expression. It is linked to community festivals called fandangos, where musicians, dancers, and spectators gather around a tarima, a wooden platform that serves as a stage for the dancers and as a percussion instrument, where the footwork is an essential part of the rhythm.
A living example of Mexico's cultural diversity, this genre is a jewel of Mexican music and a bridge between tradition and modernity. Featuring Riosentí, Colectivo Son Jarocho Madrid, María Moctezuma, and Joel Cruz.
