Description

Mataharis, (Iciar Bollain, 2007)
Int.: Najwa Nimri, Nuria González, María Vázquez. Spain. 35 mm. Color. 91'

Carmen, Inés and Eva are private detectives. While they work to uncover other people's secrets, the three of them will discover that there are lies of their own that they have not been able to see and truths that are better left unrevealed.

“Mataharis, a film with an elaborate framework, takes the archetype of the private detective and forces him to turn to the left of tradition: there is a double change of gender in the proposal of Bollain and his co-writer, Tatiana Rodríguez, because here the gaze of the explorer of other people's privacy is feminine and the coloratura goes from noir to the urgent grey of the everyday. What is at stake is not precisely a process of demystification because these characters with their strollers, cultural incommunicability or guilt complex on their backs have already left the old epic of the archetype so far behind that the only possible territory for their adventures is the everyday epic (or anti-epic). Hammett and Chandler already knew that the crime genre was a pretext to talk about other things, Iciar Bollain can allow herself the luxury of forgetting even the pretext to orchestrate her investigation of those invisible stories that define the essence of our present but that, perhaps, need the functional gaze of the detective to reveal themselves as great narrative.” (Jordi Costa)
