Description

Direction, musical direction and version Emilio Aragón
Originally directed by Stephen Schwartz and John-Michael Tebelak, it premiered on Broadway for the first time in 1971, where it was a huge success. Although it is not a religious work, the libretto is based on the narration, through sketches, of different biblical scenes with a lively and fun story that celebrates life.

In the words of Emilio Aragón himself: "Godspell is about love", "about pursuing justice, about accepting the rules of the game without giving in to what hurts us. And, above all, about remembering, if we have forgotten, that life is a path that we need to walk hand in hand with others." For Banderas, "energy" is the word that defines a staging that is "innocent, in contrast to the aggressive world in which we live."

Godspell was the first musical that Emilio Aragón saw in Spain. His sister Rita was there, and she has experienced the process of creating this update in a very emotional way. In Banderas' case, he first saw the work in the 1970s at the Teatro Cervantes in Malaga. He was just a kid, but he felt that performance was a mirror in which to look at himself.

Details

A classic of 70s musical theatre, nominated for a Tony and brought to the present day.

The scene begins in a place that could well be a theatre warehouse, a run-down tenement block or a church in ruins.

In it we discover our characters. It is a group of young people apparently members of a neighbourhood called together to make an important decision that will affect the future of their neighbours.

This first scene ends with a figure made up of the entire cast, as a metaphor for the door that takes us to fiction, where we will go through, hand in hand with each character, the transformation that they will experience when they come into deep contact with the teachings of a certain Jesus.

Together they will discover tolerance and respect for the different, the need to build and weave networks of community support, compassion for any human being, sustainable and shared wealth, the freedom to be and choose, co-responsibility in building a good life for all, the right to make mistakes and start over, to grieve with the suffering of others, to live fully, to laugh, love, sing, play, live... and even die.

Shortly before finishing we will return to the figure of the beginning, this time to cross the door again and feel that reality and fiction are one.

And in the end, when everything ends, when darkness floods everything, Godspell can be the hope that everything begins again.
