Description
Discover with our Guided Visit to the Archive of the Indies one of the most important monuments in the city.
The Casa de la Contratación de Indias, established in Seville in 1503 by Isabel la Católica to promote and regulate trade and navigation with the Spanish overseas territories, ensures that Seville obtains a monopoly with the New World.
Attracted by those ships that come and go from the Port of Seville, merchants crowd the city doing business with products from the New World. Mainly due to a conflict between the Cathedral Chapter and the Municipal Chapter, Philip II would approve the construction of the Casa Lonja de Mercaderes in Seville in 1582. It is a building, therefore, exclusive for the merchants who until then traded. on the steps of the Cathedral.
But there is nothing that lasts forever and due to the loss of the Sevillian monopoly in the Indies trade, in 1785 it became the largest documentary and archival center of the relationship between Spain and Seville with the territories of America and the Pacific: the General Archive of the Indies, listed as World Heritage by UNESCO in 1987.
